About Philippine PEN

PH PEN Profile

The Philippine PEN is a member of International PEN (Poets & Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) with Centers in some 150 countries worldwide.

The founding of the Philippine PEN was marked by a national writers conference, the first of its kind after the war, held in Baguio City, Northern Philippines, in December 1958. The event was attended by distinguished literary people and intellectuals from all over the country including President Carlos P. Garcia and Senator Claro M. Recto. The conference organizer was Philippine PEN founding chairman F. Sionil José, now National Artist for Literature. Among the participants were, later to become National Artists for Literature: Francisco Arcellana, N.V.M. Gonzalez, Alejandro Roces, Edith Tiempo and Bienvenido Lumbera.

The Philippine PEN celebrated its 60th anniversary in November 2017. For six decades, the Philippine Center has organized and sponsored literary activities such as readings, booklaunches, seminar-workshops, writers’ fora, and conferences in Manila and in the provinces. It has hosted the visits or held receptions for distinguished writers from abroad, including Nobel Laureates Wole Soyinka, Günter Grass and Mario Vargas Llosa; Richard Kim; Lin Yutang; Khushwant Singh; Hirabayashi Taiko; Hayako Sono; Norman Mailer; Mochtar Lubis; Edwin Thumboo; Juan Gelman; Javier Sicilia; Gil Won Lee; Marta Sanz, and many others. The Philippine Center also organized two regional Asian Writers conferences in Manila, and published several anthologies including an Asian PEN Anthology.

The Philippine PEN seeks to promote Philippine literature and enhance its visibility nationally and internationally; serve as a meeting-place for writers and readers to exchange ideas and creative practices; defend free expression and denounce any form of suppression; and cultivate a community of readers for Philippine literature.

Philippine PEN is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
